SCORE: 83/100 (B) *Disclosure: This Jura 10 Years was graciously sent to me by the company for the purposes of this review. In 2018, the Isle of Jura whisky range got a rather snazzy relaunch, which included this tasty 12 year old single malt. I don’t know if it’s the addition of the sherry casks to the mix, longer aging in the sherry casks or what exactly they’ve done different but it’s a nice change – it’s far more drinkable and enjoyable than the old Jura 10 years. The overarching flavor and aroma of smoked apricots is pleasant even if it’s not very deep or complex. It’s less bitter, less funky and a whole lot more flavorful. This Jura 10 years is definitely better than the old Jura 10. Ok balance, medium body and a lightly oily feel. Medium fade of peat, funk, cocoa and earthy malt. Smoked apricots toffee, nuts, spice, malty sweetness, cinnamon, apples and a light bit of earthy malt, copper and bitter cocoa. Smoked apricots toffee, dehydrated apples, dried cherries, nutmeg and a bit of earthy malt and a light floral nature. I hope this new approach and style makes its way through their lineup and we start seeing more releases come out that fit along this profile and deliver an even stronger overall portfolio. To my tastes, this Jura 10 Years relaunch is a welcome change and brings a more balanced and inviting character that was missing from the original version. Crafted in unusually tall stills, matured in the fresh sea air and American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and finished in the finest aged Oloroso Sherry butts – it’s the perfect marriage of Highland and Island styles.” The first period in American casks lends a wonderful depth of vanilla to this classy dram, and of course a touch of spice, but the complexity is down to the old sherry butts and the gentle sweetness it imparts. A whisky only Jura could make, born of our Island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from our home. This 10 year old single malt from Isle of Jura is aged first up in American white oak bourbon barrels and then finished in oloroso sherry butts. This, on the other hand, is a different story. It carried this strong earthy cumin-like character from nose to finish which I found off-putting and obtrusive. I found it to be funky and weird but not in the good and interesting way. I reviewed the original Jura 10 a few years ago and didn’t much care for it.

That spiciness lingers throughout the mouth for a while, especially at the back and roof of the mouth, and fades to a warm tingling and then to a warm honeyed sweetness.This is the latest, reconfigured recipe, of the Jura 10 Years. That spiciness builds for a few seconds to relatively intense level, wavers a bit, and then takes on a flare of renewed intensity upon swallowing.

That quickly takes on an increasingly intense spicy flavor, leading most prominently with nutmeg this time along with touches of the previously mentioned allspice and cloves. Crafted in exceptionally tall stills, matured for 10 years in America White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and the fresh sea air with a further enhancement from the. Palate: Flows onto the tongue like honey, in a way that is both exceptionally sweet and with surprisingly viscous texture that quickly the coats the tongue (I typically get that feeling more toward the finish). Jura 10 Year Single Malt Scotch whisky is crafted in exceptionally tall stills and initially matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels for 10 years. That gradually transitions into a sweeter, mellower mix in which honey and slightly tart green apples are the primary flavors – almost pushing into sauvignon blanc territory – with a touch of the aforementioned spices and faint floral notes. Nose: Hits the nose with a moderately abrupt blast of spicy citrus dominated by oak, cloves, and allspice, with notes of lemon and oats, and evened out by a touch of honey. Appearance: Golden amber, pretty middle of the road for a whisky.
